Just because you are waiting for tests does not mean you can’t be treated for your pain or lack of function. Physiotherapists are trained to make a FUNCTIONAL diagnosis, we don’t rely solely on these tests in order to treat our patients. For example, it has been well documented that patients with ADVANCED degeneration in their spine can (and often are) painfree and fully functional. Alternatively, an MRI or X-Ray can show very little and yet the patient is in severe pain. Remember that MRI, X-Ray and other tests are a static picture. The picture doesn’t always predict the function. MRI and X-Ray are usually done with the patient laying down – when their pain is not present!. A specialized physiotherapy assessment (MDTor McKenzie done here at Bonavista Physio in Calgary) has been shown in the research to reduce the need for MRI and surgery by 50%. The research was done on patients with full leg sciatica. For simple back or buttock pain, the results would be much higher. The great thing about MDT assessment and treatment is that we know within 3 Visits if it is going to work!
